Your words deserve respect. I have been respectfully improving others' words for more than 20 years; I respect the work of the writer, I respect the tenacity it takes to create something new out of words, and I respect the potential that each piece of writing can achieve if we remove errors and adjust difficult phrasing.
When I work on fiction or general nonfiction pieces, I am conscious of the great trust a writer is bestowing upon me to treasure their stories and their painstakingly chosen words. I never take this lightly, and I don't approach their work as if it is my own—to be bent to my will or my vision. Rather, I gently prune and reframe only as far as is needed to clarify and to elevate each passage.
Scientific and technical writing is different but often requires just as much delicacy. I have edited and proofed for both native English speakers and researchers for whom English is a second language.
ESL editing requires respect for the ideas of the author although these writers may need a little help finding the right English words and phrasing to express those ideas. I try to pay close attention to the context of any ESL writing so that I can make the changes necessary to bring the author's vision to life in English.
My goal is only to refine and perfect—as far as possible—but not to leave my own mark.
I also work as a graphic designer, so my attention to detail is finely tuned regarding consistency and formatting.
