I have edited more than 400 documents, of which 95% have been academic manuscripts in the life sciences, earth sciences, and chemistry. Most of my clients are ESL scientists from Asia, South America, the Middle East, and Europe. I thoroughly enjoy helping scientists improve their writing, finish their theses, and publish in scientific journals. I find learning about new scientific research exhilarating and consider myself fortunate to be able to spend my days clarifying the written scientific word. In addition to my academic work, I have also edited a non-fiction book, admissions essays, and personal documents.

I have over 25 years' experience writing, editing — and having success with — academic texts. I am adept at improving readability, flow, syntax, and word choice, at spotting mistakes large and small, and at ensuring that a text meets the highest standards of written English. During my own academic career, I published articles in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes, and was awarded competitive research grants from the MacArthur Foundation, the Social Science Research Council and the Ford Foundation. My expert English-language academic editing will help improve the succes rate of your articles submitted for publication, research proposals, grant and consulting applications, conference presentations, Ph.D. dissertations, student essays, and university application dossiers. Because I have an academic background, I am able to understand your intended meaning, as well as what your audience expects. I am fluent in Spanish, have extensive experience editing ESL texts, and currently help professors and students in over 20 countries achieve their academic and publishing goals. Through my work with governments, I am also skilled at professional and technical editing. Academic fields: Social Sciences, Economics, Law, Humanities, Education, Business, Public Administration, Arts, and Architecture.

After earning my Honors Bachelor of Arts in English (cum laude), I obtained a certificate from the Denver Publishing Institute and a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (Phi Kappa Phi). I've always been a careful tutor for my peers, and I spent my undergraduate career honing my editing skills as a newspaper copy editor (and a couple semesters in grad school working as a blog editor). Working for a periodical publication has meant that I've learned to be meticulous and professional in my editing and to get copy edited on a tight schedule. In addition to newspaper and blog work, I've also edited book manuscripts, including children's fiction, poetry, and narrative nonfiction--and my training at the publishing institute (as well as five subsequent years working in in academic publishing) has served me well in these more literary pieces. I've worked with a wide range of types of writing, and the material I've worked with has been for a wide range of audiences. I've edited academic papers, short fiction and nonfiction, magazine and newspaper articles, and the occasional business correspondence. I've also had experience working with writers for whom English is not their primary language, and I understand Spanish sufficiently to translate. As a student of literature, I've studied poetry and prose in depth. I'm eager to apply my critical understanding of literature to new works and gain experience editing new genres and styles.
